The Golgotha Walking Tour
The Golgotha Walking Tour is a brand-new experience for our guests. Twice a day park attendees join our experts for an interactive tour of the sites of the crucifixion, burial, and resurrection of Jesus. Guests meet at the base of Pilate’s Tower, as our teacher/guide paints the setting of the political climate during the time of Christ, using the tower as a backdrop. The process of the scourging that Jesus endured is demonstrated using a cat o’ nine tails. This demonstration is a powerful visual, as the guests can see the damage inflicted with just a few swings. They are then led along the Via Dolorosa (Way of Suffering) before stopping at the foot of Golgotha, where they learn of the different ideas concerning where Jesus was indeed crucified. As they resume toward the top of the hill, the guide discusses the crucifixion in detail. Guests also have an opportunity to see the types of nails that would have been used for crucifixions during this time. As the tour moves to the empty tomb area, the guide discusses the burial of Jesus as well as what methods would have been taken to minimize the possibility of the appearance of a resurrection. The description of the resurrection and what people did to cover it up is what ends the tour at the garden tomb. Guests are then free to explore at their leisure.
While the Golgotha Walking Tour takes place outside on most days, the tour can be moved inside if rain makes it necessary to do so. Guests still have the opportunity to learn the same information, while the guide uses photographs on a TV wall to illustrate.
